With the development of polymer material industry, plastic, synthetic rubber, synthetic fiber and other polymer materials are more and more widely used in building materials, household appliances, electronic equipment, automobile, chemical industry, transportation and other fields.
The flame retardant performance of polymer materials has also attracted attention all over the world. As organic halogenated flame retardants have great environmental pollution, the non-toxic and harmless inorganic flame retardants has been increasing used.
1.Introduction of magnesium hydroxide flame retardant
Magnesium hydroxide is a new type of filling flame retardant, which is recognized as an excellent flame retardant with the functions of flame retardant, smoke suppression and filling in the rubber and plastics industry. It is widely used in rubber, chemical, building materials, plastics and electronics, unsaturated polyester and other polymer materials.
In particular, it can replace aluminum hydroxide with flame retardant and anti-static, which can be applied to the mine air duct coating, PVC transport belt, flame retardant aluminum plastic board, flame retardant tarpaulin, PVC wire and cable materials, and the mine cable sheath and cable accessories. Compared with similar inorganic flame retardant, magnesium hydroxide has better smoke suppression effect. Magnesium hydroxide does not discharge harmful substances in the process of production, use and waste, and it can neutralize the acidic and corrosive gases produced in the combustion process.
2. Flame retardant principle
As a filler type flame retardant, during thermal decomposition, it generates water vapor, absorbing huge amount of heat, which will reduce temperature on surface of base materials and slow down speed of compounds’ degradation. Meanwhile, emerging of combustibles will also be reduced. Released water dilutes oxygen on surface, making combustion processing difficult. Magnesium hydroxide forms a carbonized layer on the surface of the material to prevent the entry of oxygen and heat, and the magnesium oxide formed by the decomposition of magnesium hydroxide is a high-grade refractory material, so when the combustion source disappears, the fire stops automatically, and achieve flame retardant effect.
Since the flame retardant action of magnesium hydroxide mainly occurs in the polymer degradation zone, and reduces generation of combustibles, and the effect on the pre-combustion zone is small, the complete combustion effect of the combustibles is small, the generated smoke is also reduced, and magnesium hydroxide can dilutes and absorbs smoke, so magnesium hydroxide has a smoke-suppression effect.
